Mission
The Organization of the Jews in Bulgaria “Shalom” is the representative non-governmental organization of Bulgarian Jewry and the legal successor of the Jewish Consistory established in 1939. It brings together Jews in Bulgaria and their families. The mission of the organization is to preserve, safeguard, and develop the identity, traditions, and material-historical heritage of Bulgarian Jewry through activities in the fields of culture, education, spiritual life, and social support.
The organization strives to initiate, implement, and support projects and ideas for the development of civil society and the preservation of historical memory in Bulgaria. It actively opposes hate speech, manifestations of antisemitism and xenophobia, and works to protect the religious rights and freedoms of all citizens.
Vision
Our vision is for the Organization of the Jews in Bulgaria “Shalom” to be a community of members who consciously and actively work toward achieving the organization’s values and goals. It should provide excellent opportunities for Jewish education and personal development, and serve as an example in Bulgarian society of a modern organization oriented toward the needs and aspirations of each of its members. Its staff should strive to meet these needs with respect and dignity toward everyone. The organization’s programs should be as open as possible to its members and ensure the continuity and development of Jewish culture, traditions, and life in the future.
The organization should be led by volunteers, with every member having the opportunity to volunteer in a way that suits them. It should strive to become self-sustaining and transparent in its activities, while ensuring equal access, rights, and responsibilities for all its members regarding its development and sustainability. The Organization of the Jews in Bulgaria “Shalom” should continue to be an important part of Bulgarian society, a driver of positive change, and a defender of the rights of its members.
